- Element Poster Due!

- Review previously learned trends in the Periodic Table.
Examples: 1. Metals are towards the left and tend to lose electrons.
Non-metals are towards the right and tend to gain or share electrons.

2. Elements within a column (family) have similar properties.

3. Elements which tend to lose/gain/share only one electron tend to be more
reactive than those which need to lose/gain/share a larger number of electrons.

- Do the lab: Trends in the Periodic Table (drop lithium, sodium, and potassium into water).
- Homework: Read and attempt all questions on the lab sheet handout (Lab report due Thursday).

Don't forget: Chemistry Unit Test this Friday!

SNC 1D
- Review yesterday's topic: Valence Electrons
- Lesson/Note: Ions
- Make predictions as to how many electrons various elements will gain or lose, and what resulting ion they will form.
Ex: Lithium, sodium, or potassium will lose one electron and become +1,
beryllium, magnesium, or calcium will lose two electrons and become +2,
fluorine, chlorine, or bromine will gain one electron and become -1
oxygen or sulfur will gain two electrons and become -2
- Assigned work: Read p. 265-267 (Section 8.1) and do p. 267 #1-3

SNC 1D
- Take up work from page 252 (#2-4)
- Lesson/Note: Valence Electrons/Octet Rule
- Demonstration: Reactivity of an Element with 1 vs. 2 vs. 3 valence electrons.
Result:
Sodium (1 valence electron): Most Reactive
Magnesium (2 valence electrons): Less reactive
Aluminum (3 valence electrons): Least reactive of the three

Conclusion: An element which needs to lose (or gain) fewer electrons in order to obtain a full outer shell will be more reactive than an element which needs to lose (or gain) more electrons.
